The Walking Dead

Now, I'll start this off by saying I haven't watched every single episode of The Walking Dead (I still need to study haha), but I reckon I've seen enough of the show to gain an understanding of it. Rick Grimes awakes from a lengthy coma to a world filled with zombies now known as walkers, and is immediately thrust into a desperate battle of survival.

It's great to see that this isn't just about a bunch gung-ho men and women tearing bloody swathes through the zombie hordes with shotguns blazing and chainsaws roaring. People die. A lot. The walkers arent your 28 Days Later sprinters, yet there is something inherently sinister about their menacing shuffle towards the still-living. Throughout the first season some powerful themes of family and loss are explored, particularly in the violent yet poignant episode 4, "Vatos". It's also interesting to see how survivors deal with the potential "zombification" of fallen friends and family.

In the second series the show continues to get darker, and another interesting aspect of human nature rears its ugly head. Survival of the fittest. Here, survivors kill, betray and attack one another, and as tensions continue to rise so too does the bodycount.

I find it fascinating how the survivors are so eager to get at each other's necks, and as time passes some of the survivors begin to lose their humanity, such as the typical "bad-boy" Shane who has already proven himself to be a ruthless, selfish killer.

In the final episode of Season 2, several of the key characters die and a couple more are killed in a massive zombie attack, and in the last seconds of screening we see a prison complex..... Google the Comicon trailer for Season 3 for more info
